This exquisite old book, known as the Commentary or Huelgas Apocalypse, is a rare manuscript dating back to 1220. Created in Spain, possibly in Toledo, it offers a fascinating glimpse into medieval history. The original’s binding is a Spanish 17th-century red velvet cover over sturdy boards, adorned with silver bosses and corner pieces. At the center of the cover, a striking single-headed silver eagle catches the eye.
The book comprises a total of 184 leaves. The text is written in Latin, with 2 columns and 46 lines per page, on vellum. The manuscript showcases skilled illuminations, featuring 46 full-page miniatures and 71 smaller miniatures, adding a rich visual dimension to the text.
The primary text within this volume is the Commentary on the Apocalypse by Saint Beatus, Presbyter of Liebana. It spans from folio 1 to folio 149 verso. Additionally, the manuscript includes Saint Jerome's Commentariorum on the Book of Daniel, spanning from folio 150 to folio 182 verso.
REPRODUCTION DETAILS: OUR HARDCOVER BOOKS ARE MADE WITH REAL WOOD FOR THE INTERIOR OF THE FRONT AND BACK COVERS AS WELL AS THE SPINE. THE LEATHER IS A 4 OZ COWHIDE, FROM A SMALL SUPPLIER IN NORTH CAROLINA. THE LEATHER IS ADHERED TO THE COVERS WITH GLUE AND MOLDED INTO THE SHAPE AT THE HAND OF OUR LOCAL ARTISANS. THE SIGNATURES/PAGES ARE HANDSEWN USING A LIBRARY BINDING METHOD. THE SEWN BOOK IS BOUND WITH A STRONG ADHESIVE GLUE THAT MAKES THE BINDINGS LAST, ESPECIALLY FOR THE LARGER BOOKS. WE ALSO ADD A THICK MULL CLOTH TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE BINDING, DRYING IN BETWEEN EACH LAYER, A TRADITIONAL WAY TO MAKE THE BINDING STIFF, STRONG, AND RESILIENT FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
