Title: Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum (Ecclesiastical History of the English People)

Tiberius Bede

Page Number: 322

Date: 1st half of the 9th century

Original Description: This manuscript is a beautifully adorned copy of the Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum (Ecclesiastical History of the English People) by Bede the Venerable. It is commonly referred to as the 'Tiberius Bede' and was created in the south of England in the late 8th or early 9th century. During the 9th and 10th centuries, Latin and Old English glosses were added to the manuscript in ink on various pages (ff. 5r-5v, 10v, 34v, 60v, 67r, 124v, 125r).

Contents:

Pages 3r-157v: Bede the Venerable's Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, beginning with the words: 'Gloriosissimo regi Ceoluulfo Beda famulus Christi et presbyter historiam gentis Anglorum ecclesiasticam, quam nuper edideram' (To the most glorious King Ceolwulf, Bede, servant of Christ and priest, presents the ecclesiastical history of the English people, which I recently published).

Please note that the original first page (f. 1) and the last page (f. 158), which contained leaves from a 14th-century Psalter, have been removed from this manuscript and placed in Royal MS 13 D I*, ff. 27, 29.

Decoration: The manuscript features several initials adorned with red, green, and yellow, incorporating interlace designs and the heads of mythical creatures (ff. 5v, 34v, 60v, 94r, 126r) at the beginning of each book. Additionally, the text throughout the manuscript includes initials embellished with intricate penwork.

Facsimile Details: New Photos coming soon and all book will be stamped with title and date on cover and spine.
